Welcome back “The State of Arena”! It has been a couple of weeks but there has been a lot of stuff going on. Let’s jump right in!
First off we had the Historic Open in which we scrubbed out after just 2 attempts in the first day of Best of One competition. It’s designed for players to attempt it multiple times, and costs resources in a way that multiple attempts will require actual money to be spent. Keeping with the theme of not spending much actual money on it, I limited myself to just 2 attempts. I feel like I had a good deck for day 2 and the Best of Three format, but alas it wasn’t meant to be.
We also had the Players Tour finals for standard in which we had a few new decks trying to topple the Temur Reclamation decks, but ultimately Temur was the deck that took the whole tournament. This performance, along with all of the complaints and the presence throughout the tournament led to what was probably the biggest surprise the following Monday after the tournament with an emergency banning.
As mentioned, the Monday after the Open and PT Finals, WOTC dropped a bomb with emergency bans of key cards in all of the top tier decks for standard. Teferi, Time Raveler, Wilderness Reclamation, Cauldron Familiar, Growth Spiral all got hit by the ban hammer so now we are delving into a brand new standard format. I’m excited to see exactly how it plays out, but I can already tell that Temur Adventures, Mardu Winota, and Mono Red are going to be heavy players in the format. We also saw Wilderness Reclamation and Teferi effectively banned in Historic, along with bannings in older formats as well.
This week I have been toying with some random decks in Standard, and pretty much have not touched Historic as Goblins are still there and will run amok for the most part. Maybe I’ll get around to building that deck and try to just jam it, but for now, I am going to play Standard most of the time.
That is all for this week! Tune in to my streams as we dive into MTG Arena almost daily. Feel free to provide feedback or ask for tips and strategies by emailing me at firstname.lastname@example.org or contacting us here at the site! Until next time, happy gaming my friends and we will see you then!
